Roswell is famous in UFOlogy for the alien spaceship crash that occurred in July, 1947. While the mystery of what really occurred that summer day in Roswell has consumed all the attention, there are other mysteries that have gone under the radar. What could be more mysterious than an extraterrestrial you may ask, how about its ghost? ![]()
Let's have a hot-tub time moment and return to 1947. In July, a crash is reported of an alien craft in Roswell, New Mexico and alien bodies are taken to Roswell Air Field hospital. It was rumored that one of the ETs was still alive at the crash site, and then died at the hospital. The wreckage and the remains were held at Hangar 84 a former B-29 hangar located on East Enterprise Ave, until being shipped to different destinations. One of them was the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and its notorious "Hangar 18".
Not all the witnesses were military personnel, one was Glenn Dennis a mortician who worked for Ballard's Funeral Home. He received a very strange call on July 5, 1947 from the base mortuary officer requesting to have three, small, airtight caskets delivered to the base. If that wasn't strange enough, the officer called back in order to find out how to handle a body that had been burned. Mr. Dennis knew that something was afoot when later that day as he was driving an ambulance and dropping off an injured airmen, he saw strange pieces of wreckage in the back of another ambulance. An officer at Roswell Field who saw him looking at it chased him off, warning him not to talk or "somebody will be picking your bones out of the sand". According to Dennis, a few days later he spoke to a friend who was a nurse. She told him she had been called in to assist in a very strange autopsy. She said that the examination was for three bodies that were small with large heads, four fingers on each hand which ended in pads. They also gave off a very strong odor. Only a few years later Roswell Army Air Field had been renamed Walker Air Force Base and in 1960, the wooden, one-story hospital had been replaced with a brick structure. Walker AFB was closed in 1967, and the base hospital sat empty. The New Mexico Rehabilitation Center (NMRC) decided to use the unused facility. Later on the center's haunted floor was found to align exactly where the old, Roswell hospital's surgery ward was located. The following was astory told by the late Jim Marrs when he visited this location: Mrs. Allen told me (Jim Marrs) that the film crew could have free access to one wing on the second floor as it was being used mostly for storage. ![]()
Many believe that authorities vigorously denied what happened in Roswell in 1947 because only a few years before on Halloween night of 1938, the Mercury Theater's radio broadcast of the War of the Worlds had panicked Americans across the country.
What would Americans do if the story was true this time? More than seventy years have passed; will America ever know the truth of what happened that summer night out in the New Mexican desert?
