What is Astrology?

Astrology comes from the Latin word astrologia, which comes from the Greek words for star or the study of stars. It, along with tarot divination is one of the core studies of Western esotericism.
Astrology is a divinatory practice using the positions of celestial objects. Different cultures have used a form of astrology dating back to ancient civilizations. Observation of the skies and celestial bodies were used to predicts terrestrial events, and how they affected human affairs.
The oldest astrological system dates to the 19th-17th century B.C. in Mesopotamia, where it spread throughout Europe and the islamic world. It was considered a scholarly tradition and was studied in learned circles along with astronomy, meteorology, medicine and alchemy.
Evidence has been found of humans measuring, recording and predicting seasonal changes, by markings found on bones and cave walls. They reflect that lunar cycles were being noted as early as 25,000 years ago. This was due to the moon's influence on tides and rivers, which could predict annual floods or dry periods. Many temples were built in alignment with heliacal risings of the stars.
Ancient Greek philosophers argued against astrology claiming it denied free will, however the Greek used the Hellenistic astrology model which included the zodiac.
Thrasyllus was astrologer to emperor Tiberius (42 B.C. - 37 A.D.) in Rome, and he was the first emperor to have a court astrologer.
Present day about 27% of Americans believe in astrology.
